Back from the Dead: Ford Building a New Ford GT Supercar for 2016
Talk about a blast from the past — at the 2015 North American International Auto Show, Ford revealed that it will be resurrecting the Ford GT for 2016! Ford hasn’t built a GT since 2006, and the 2016 model will be in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Ford GT40’s first victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.
Make no mistake: the upcoming Ford GT will earn its title of “supercar.” It was developed in complete secrecy over the past year by a small team in the basement of the Product Development Center in Dearborn, Michigan — a basement accessible only by a secret entrance. The new GT will be built with a light frame, aerodynamic shape and a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine. Put together, these characteristics mean the 2016 GT will yield more than 600 horsepower. It’s not hard to imagine the new GT returning to Le Mans, France to challenge its old record and start a new winning streak!
A limited amount of GT vehicles will be produced for the second half of 2016. It’s intended for a global audience, but, according to Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford, initial sales will be made only in the United States. Good news for us! The GT will also be featured in Microsoft’s upcoming Forza Motorsport 6 video game, all in glossy high-definition detail. That means everyone will be able to drive the GT in one form or another!
